Career Transitions

Navigating Change with the Enneagram

Being made redundant is one of life's most challenging transitions. But within this challenge lies an opportunity—to reconnect with what truly matters and design a career aligned with your authentic self.

Why Generic Advice Falls Short

Most redundancy support treats everyone the same: update your CV, network more, stay positive. But this one-size-fits-all approach ignores a fundamental truth—we each process change differently.

Some of us need time to grieve before we can move forward. Others need to take immediate action to feel in control. Some thrive by connecting with others, while some need solitude to process.

The Enneagram reveals these differences—and more importantly, shows you how to access resources within yourself that you might not know you have.

The Power of Your Lines

The Enneagram is a dynamic system. Beyond your core type, you have access to the helpful behaviours of connected types through your integration and stress lines—bringing radically different energies that expand your resourcefulness.

How It Works

Each Enneagram type has two connected types that offer complementary strategies during times of change.

Type 1 can access the emotional depth of 4 and the optimism of 7
Type 2 can access the authenticity of 4 and the boundaries of 8
Type 3 can access the groundedness of 6 and the peace of 9
Type 4 can access the discipline of 1 and the generosity of 2
Type 5 can access the energy of 8 and the possibilities of 7
Type 6 can access the calm of 9 and the confidence of 3
Type 7 can access the focus of 5 and the follow-through of 1
Type 8 can access the retreat of 5 and the vulnerability of 2
Type 9 can access the ambition of 3 and the planning of 6

Claire's Story

A Type 1's journey from redundancy to entrepreneurship

Claire was a Sustainability Officer in a large manufacturing company, leading her region's sustainability initiatives. She excelled in her role and took pride in the rigour and discipline she brought to her work.

The Challenge

When Claire was made redundant, her initial reaction was a sense of injustice and unusually strong anger. She felt that her previous efforts were not good enough—that perhaps she was not good enough. She struggled to reconcile how she could have done everything right and still been made redundant.

Working with Her Lines

Moving to her 4-line: Claire embraced her emotionality and used it to connect to her core purpose. If there wasn't a "should," what would she do? She realised her deep connection to environmental causes hadn't changed—she was in the right industry.

Moving to her 7-line: Claire gained access to positive energy, entrepreneurship, and creativity. She realised how many valuable connections she had, and recalled how many people had said they'd love for her to handle their sustainability compliance.

The Outcome

For the first time in her working life, Claire started considering how she could set up her own small sustainability consultancy—doing what she loved most, what she was good at, and doing it her way: ethical and transparent.
